I referred to Isabella Bird and her 1873 travelogue to the Colorado territory in a previous module. In her 60s, she traveled to China and took photographs and wrote about them, sharing one of the first multimedia travelogues.
In today’s Internet, a page of just text is overwhelming—we expect to see images, especially of our travels. The web allows video and audio and design to convey more than words alone. While I want to encourage you to share images for all the remaining assignments, to begin, I want you to produce a visual (or aural) expression of a place.
Your assignment
In this assignment, you will be creating something beyond words alone such as an audio slideshow, video, infographic, or images that share something about travel using primarily media other than text. You can do voiceovers or write descriptions if using Instagram, but try and convey something about a place using media other than the text alone. There is no set length. A 2-minute video is the norm because they generate the most views, but you can make it any length you want. An Infographic should feel like it was more than ten minutes of work. If you want to do something with Instagram or Instagram Stories (remember, an Instagram Story disappears after 24 hours), that would be fine. What I don’t want is just three images pasted into the Writing Adventures blog—I’m looking for something linkable, and, as with all other assignments, something that a person searching for your place would be compelled to view.
- When you are done, post it to Youtube, Instagram, or Canva, or wherever you created your piece. Feel free to use any tool, platform, or system you want to convey your story. I only suggested the first three apps because they are common.
- When you are done, compose/paste into a New Post on the Writing Adventures blog with the link to the work.
- Select Multimedia from the Categories
- Write in your Tag. If you are using more than one tag, separate them with a comma.
- Select Publish.
- Await your Editorial Review task. Complete your review of your peers’ work.
- After you receive your comments from me and your peers, revise your piece and change it on the original hosting place and make sure the link on the Writing Adventures blog still points to it. Yes, you might have to revise your media, just as you might in a publication situation. Save your work.
