While How To articles have been around for ages, they have taken on a new significance because it is how people tend to search for things on the internet: How do I _______. Titling an article “How To” is the first step to SEO.
While many How To articles take the genre form of a listicle, they do not have to. You can write a longform or non-list How To article—either is acceptable for this assignment. Much like the Informative piece, the topic here should be your focus, and avoid the personal. The How To is written for an audience looking to prepare for a trip or understand how to travel to a place.
Your assignment
You will write a How To guide for some travel related topic. You will have some choice in the specific genre features of this piece (e.g., longform, listicle). The point is to write an informative, How To piece that is supported by your expertise on the topic. Length is not important, nor will it matter to the peer editors or me. What we are looking for is something unique, and that is difficult to find when the “How To” is so popular. Thus, avoid things like “How to find the best ski deals” since there are a million articles on that topic. You might have to do some research, but you can also use whatever experience you have as well.
